Miami Beach

Our route back to the UK takes us via Miami and we decide to spend a day in South Beach where our friend Susie has kindly arranged for us to stay at the Mondrian Hotel, a very trendy hotel with marvellous views from our balcony on the fifteenth floor overlooking the lagoon and across to the skyline of the city.

Having last been here 25 years ago Miami has changed beyond recognition. It is stylish, cosmopolitan and attracts the most beautiful people. Not a single Fatty in sight - other than our very own of course. We walk down the famous beach, past the Art Deco buildings and along Lincoln Avenue. At the suggestion of Tom, I have recently become a shareholder in Tesla, the electric car company founded by Elon Musk who previously founded Paypal. Last night Tom called to say that Tesla had announced revenues of five hundred million dollars; up from fifty million last year, and as a result there had been a big hike in the share price. Walking down Lincoln Avenue it seems propitious that we should pass a Tesla showroom so we call Tom and take photos of the new electric car. Apparently there are already 10,000 on the road and the cars will be available in Europe in the next few months. No road tax, no engine noise, 0 to 60 in 3.8 seconds, a range of 300 miles on a full charge and you can recharge it from a three-pin plug in a few hours!

The concierge at the hotel recommends a seafood restaurant for dinner and we eat outside on the pavement in a scene that could be anywhere in Europe but not what we associate with Florida. It is 9pm in the evening and a beautiful girl wearing a red bikini walks by carrying a crash helmet and drives off on her motorbike as if it is the most natural thing to do. Fatty wags her finger at me and tells me to concentrate on the menu. From Miami it is only a stone's throw to the Bahamas which has the best bone fishing in the world and it would be rude not to go, so the following day we take a flight to Nassau.

If you are reading this and considering booking a hotel for business or holiday, our friends Susie and Andrew run a hotel booking business and can get you the best rates at great hotels. Thanks Susie. susie@spectrumhotels.biz<mailto:susie@spectrumhotels.biz>
